Kverrestad

Where national road 9 passes through Lunnarp, a road sign points to Kverrestad, a small village with a typical parish center feeling, i.e. houses and farms gathered around the church and the vicarage with the associated vicarage park.

Kverrestad Church was built in 1871-73 and replaced an older Roman church building. The baptismal font and pulpit from the 17th century remain from the old church.

Near the vicarage is the Kverrestad poorhouse. The warehouse has an interesting rune stone in the wall. The parish hall in the village is frequently used for weddings and similar events.

In Kverrestad there is a large machine station, a popular retro/design shop and a neat farm hotel. Just outside the village, towards Ingelstad, we find Hälldala Ranch which is Skåne's largest riding center for Western riding and Reining. The surroundings are undulating river area in the south and arable land with dry meadows with rich flora.

In the cemetery, just to the right of the entrance gates, we find a small inconspicuous wooden cross. Beneath it lies the thirteen-year-old bush boy from the Namib Desert, who ended up with a farming couple in Kverrestad at the end of the 19th century and was named Josef de Vylder. According to the story, Josef could not cope with the Swedish mud. He missed the winds of the desert and died of a broken heart. Henning Mankell, among others, has written about Josef.

There are bus and train connections from Lunnarp. The nearest major town with school and other services is Smedstorp about six kilometers to the east or the central town of Tomelilla about the same distance to the west.
