Where did the Scanian language come from, and what does Skåne's Danish past have to do with it? And how far back in time can we trace Scanian as a dialect?
When the Scanian languages became the subject of systematic studies in the 19th and 20th centuries, we encountered a richly divided dialect geography with major differences between the different areas of the province.
But despite this diversity - and despite the fact that it is a transitional area - there are some salient features that clearly distinguish Skånemålen from its neighbouring dialects in southern Sweden, and on the Danish islands.
