What makes people all over the world, young and old, pick up a spray can, a pen and write a made-up name, illegally, and then do it again the next day and the next? What exactly is graffiti, how can we understand it as an expression and its role in the city? Who is spraying and why are they doing it? Erik Hannerz is a sociologist and subculture researcher who has spent the last decade researching these questions. Join us on a journey through graffiti and street art in all its forms, subcultural symbols, rules and rituals, and the consequences for both practitioners and society. Erik Hannerz is a senior lecturer at the Department of Sociology at Lund University. He defended his thesis on subcultural theory at Uppsala University in 2013 and has since then researched graffiti, urban creativity, and internet detectives.
