70 Road in Österlen - Year in Review 2020

Chronicle 2020 - about the past year in Österlen

In times like these, when Corona has once again taken a firm grip on the entire country, it feels like an important opportunity to actually look back on what has been positive this strange year. A year that really showed that Österlen has a very bright future ahead of it! When the rest of the country has been hit hard by the effects of the pandemic, Österlen's attraction has become even stronger. Never before have more tourists or newcomers been attracted by Österlen's beauty and quality of life!

Winter 2020

The year actually started somewhat normally. But already at the beginning of March, the corona situation began to make itself noticeably noticeable for the tourism entrepreneurs in Österlen.

Spring 2020

A crazy beautiful spring – rarely have the fruit trees bloomed as much as this year and certainly the rapeseed fields shone more yellow than ever before – but basically completely deserted in Österlen. The only thing that shone brighter than the rapeseed fields was the lack of tourists in Österlen!

Österlen – this is where you could live!

When everything felt the most gloomy this spring, at the beginning of April, we launched a campaign on social media to get people to move to our fantastic municipality! The basic idea was that life must be a little better in beautiful, spacious Österlen than living in a one-bedroom apartment in a big city suburb with the subway as your best friend.

And sure enough, it turned out that these thoughts actually contained more than a grain of truth. Rarely have we seen such an influx of people to Österlen as in 2020. Something that has also led to a substantial price increase in the Österlen real estate market! But even though the prices of houses have increased over the past year, it still feels like a bargain compared to the prices in the big cities!

Meet spring in Österlen

A few weeks later, we launched the campaign – "Österlen package in Corona times" – where we collected Österlen's very best corona-secured packages.  And the timing couldn't have been better. Despite the fact that the film was only shown on social media, and without any real marketing budget, it was seen by more than 100,000 unique visitors!

Summer 2020

When Löfven presented the easing of travel restrictions at the beginning of June, the starting shot was also fired for what would be perhaps the craziest summer (and autumn!) in living memory here in Österlen.
The summer weather tempted us to swim and even though we have more than eight miles of beaches down here with us, there were sometimes a lot of problems with parking at beaches such as Knäbäckshusen and Sandhammaren!

Autumn 2020

September and October were perhaps the months that really showed that Österlen's attractiveness de facto increased significantly in the wake of the pandemic. Tourists and newcomers continued to flock to Österlen!

The September Exhibition 2020...
Already just before Easter, when it became clear that the traditional art tour of ÖSKG was being made, plans were made to launch a new art event in Österlen. But then with a focus on making the art more visible to everyone who visits Österlen during the high season – Österlen Summer Art Fair! For various reasons, however, we decided to jump on Thomas Wallner's idea of a high-quality art project in the autumn.  What would later become known as the September Exhibition.

For being the first year, and considering that the Corona made it difficult to add peripheral activities, it must be said that the exhibition was a formidable success! The films promoting the event were seen by more than 30,000 people and not least Kristianstadsbladet and our local newspaper Ystads Allehanda wrote columns about the event. Perhaps not so strange as the more well-known line-up of artists was probably the strongest ever in Österlen!

So, despite the lack of the formidable highlight of autumn – the Apple Market – the hotels and restaurants were filled to an even greater extent than in a normal year! And from an artistic perspective, you can say that the craving for Österlen art is stronger than ever! Already after the first weekend, the attendance records were broken at several of the participating galleries! Owe Gustafson, Börje Lindberg, Niels Bonde, Mats Theselius, and another 35 of Sweden's most renowned contemporary artists with a connection to Österlen!

... and 2021!
After this year's success, we can therefore already reveal that there will certainly be a new edition of the event next year as well – the September exhibition 2021.

And, if there is a Summer Art Fair in 2021, that also seems a bit tempting at the time of writing! One thing is for sure: ÖSKG's art tour will at least as usual start the season just in time for Easter!
