Tosterup in Tomelilla municipality is for many synonymous with Tosterup Castle, built in various stages during the 1400-1700s, just over a mile south of Tomelilla and 12 kilometres north-east of Ystad. The castle complex is well clustered on the crest of the slope facing south.
The castle and its moat are surrounded by farm buildings of varying age. The grey stone Barnekowska Lodge to the west of the castle is said to be particularly interesting, but the old school, the blacksmith's shop and the gardener's cottage in half-timbering are also significant. The new school and workers' dwellings lie below the slope to the south and the residential buildings have an unmistakable odour of 1940s detached houses.
To the south of the castle is the castle church and further south a newer cemetery. The oldest parts of the church date from the 12th century, but were given their present appearance in the 16th century.
The oldest known owner of the castle was Axel Eskilssen, who lived around 1330. The castle's high tower was built by Jörgen Tygesen Brahe in the mid-16th century. The estate was passed down through his family until 1640, when it was sold to the so-called King of Skåne, Tage Thott. Eventually the castle came into the possession of the Ehrensvärd family, and this is still the case today.
On a Sunday in late summer, the sports club in the neighbouring village of Svenstorp organises a very well attended harvest festival, where the history attracts lots of families.
The nearest major town with services of various kinds such as schools, nursing homes, shops, etc. is Glemmingebro and Köpingebro in Ystad municipality, about two kilometres from Tosterup or in the central town. Tomelilla, one mile to the north.
Bus connections are available from Glemmingebro, Bollerup and Svenstorp.
