Afrika-Micke - The natural way to go on a safari in Österlen

Tomelilla

It combines culture with pleasure - in the centre of Österlen.
With the railway linking Malmö, Simrishamn and Ystad, Tomelilla quickly became an important station community. The sea can be reached in just 15 minutes by car, the most beautiful beaches in all of Sweden! Also in the neighbourhood of Tomelilla nature is close by in Fyledalen, Brösarp's slopes, Örup's Almbackar, Benestad slopes and much more. The buildings vary, with two- and three-storey houses in the centre and residential areas outside the centre.

There are a number of businesses, municipal services, schools, cultural centres, libraries, cinemas and shops, some of which have achieved national status. Five minutes away is the well-known Daniel Berlin's restaurant, which has been awarded two stars by Guide Michelin. The community life is rich and many call Tomelilla the Mecca of motorsport with Tomelilla MK's fine facility Svampabanan, where lots of crowd-pulling competitions in rally and motocross are organised annually, often with SM, EM or World Cup status.

There are also tennis courts, bowling alley, shooting range, sports and swimming centre, outdoor swimming pool, campsite, bingo golf and one of the Sweden's best golf courses. There are also active exercise, gymnastics and sports clubs. There is a nice electric track in Kronoskogen and two good gyms. When the weather permits in winter, there are also cross-country ski tracks and an ice rink. There are also many fine riding centres around Tomelilla, where boarding is possible. You can visit the Nostalgic Café's 50s collections, the Hasse & Tage Museum or entertain the whole family at Tosselilla Sommarland. Proximity to the best concert venues, Kronovall Wine Castle, Christinehof Castle, Svaneholm Castle and Sövde Amphitheatre.

Tomelilla is a major trading town with banks, pharmacies, systembolaget, shoe shop, brand store, sports shop and department store, large car and machine companies. Coop, Ica and Lidl, yes everything you would expect from a municipal centre. Several good primary and secondary schools, including the popular Tryde Friskola, secondary school, Österlens Folkhögskola and also a Naturbruksgymnasium specialising in horses and agriculture in Bollerup. You can travel to and from Tomelilla by bus and train. It is three miles to Simrishamn, just over two miles to Ystad and around six miles to Öresund.

It began as a small farming village, mentioned in writing in 1437 as Tommarp lille, Lilla Tommarp, but once the railway in the second half of the 19th century linked the village to Eslöv, Malmö, Simrishamn and Ystad, Tomelilla was quickly transformed into an important railway station community. This development left very clear traces in the central parts of the community with its rectangular blocks of urban houses and villas, often in red brick with rich plaster architecture and elaborate pattern masonry. Nevertheless, the buildings in the centre can be considered small-scale. There are two- and three-storey houses in the city centre, and detached houses and villas in the suburbs.

Early industries were established and although the slaughterhouse buildings have now been demolished, examples of older industrial buildings remain, among all the newer ones north of the village.
Tomelilla is the municipality's centre and has around 5 800 inhabitants. Wave 19 and national road 9 intersect in the community.
