Almost in the middle of Tomelilla municipality, about six kilometres north-east of the town centre, on the road to Onslunda, is Spjutstorp. The surroundings are open, hilly farmland. Once upon a time, the railway tracks ended up near the old church village with its well-preserved old-fashioned character where street houses and farms alternate with station houses and newer residential buildings make up today's active village.
Sweden's first open-air swimming pool with a swimming school was built in Spjutstorp in 1936, an establishment that still attracts many exercisers, bathing enthusiasts and swimmers in the summer. The swimming pool is next door to the sports ground where the highly successful Spjutstorp IF association has become something of a nursery for football talent, both boys and girls.
In Spjutstorp there is a lot that revolves around music and dance. On a number of summer evenings, Bäckavallen's dance rotunda invites you to dance. Motorbike enthusiasts, especially motorcyclists, also gather here throughout the year. The village is also home to the traditional Spjutstorps Badorkester, which travels around Österlen providing entertainment. Almost every year, the local revue Spjutstorpsrevyn draws large crowds of laughter to its performances in the spring.
There is evidence to suggest that people have lived in Spjutstorp since Viking times.
Like so many other villages, Spjutstorp lost in size and importance when the change of ownership was implemented, but with the railway, Spjutstorp developed into a station community with expanded services. The church, which was opened in 1869, has a hostel and a popular camping site. The village has a leisure centre, car sales, a kennel, a dog boarding house, a DIY market, etc.
Today, the village has around 200 inhabitants. The nearest primary school for years F-6 is in Onslunda.
