The road between S. Mellby and Vitaby has been called Prästavägen since time immemorial, for a reason as simple as it is natural. Both churches were served by the same priest and there could be several journeys a week between the two churches, the big grandiose one in S. Mellby and the unique, small i Vitaby.
The view is formidable over Hanöbukten with Råkefuret's genuine forest on both sides of Klammersbäck, towards Torup Castle and Brösarp's hills in the north. Along Prästavägen there are a fairly large number of large farms and on the slopes to the east down towards Kivik is a row of holiday homes. These make up Hjälmaröd, a rather stretched village with completely different characters.
Hjälmaröd as an address also includes the nationally recognised heathland, which for three days in July is invaded by 100,000s of people when the traditional Kivik market, Sweden's largest, takes place. In addition to active agricultural properties, Hjälmaröd also has other businesses housed in parcelled farms.
In the northern valley of the village, the Mölleån river has cut into the terrain and finds its outlet in White mole, right next to the popular bathing beach. A little upstream is the old watermill Krubbemölla, which is mentioned in writing as far back as 1698. The mill has been restored on several occasions and attracts many visitors every year, as of course does Vitaby church with its characteristic buttress.
Along Prästavägen is also the cultural centre Mellby atelier, which in collaboration with Musik i syd organises annual classical concerts. The distance to Kivik with school, shops, petrol station is a couple of kilometres. Bus connections are in White mole, Kivik and Vitaby.
