Up in the north-west corner of Tomelilla municipality we find the small village of Sillaröd. The village consists mainly of old farms. There has been an active village council in the village for a very long time. Everything that happened in the village, worth noting in the years 1784-1910, was written down in a book that ended up in the national archives in Lund. More by chance, a person with roots in Sillaröd found the book. It was reprinted and can now be purchased by interested parties. The village team continued to make notes and therefore there is an invaluable document to study for those who so wish.
The importance of the village has, like so many other small villages, declined over time, but new arrivals have revitalised the village. Recently, the villagers have worked together to create an electrically lit boules court around which to gather and socialise, so we can justifiably talk about the genuine cohesion of the village.
At one time, the village consisted of three farms owned by the Swedish king, Tage Thott and Jochum Beck. Beck eventually sold his farm to the Piper family in Christinehof. Proximity to Christinehof and not least to the alum plant, can be seen in the large number of stone fences around the village. It was forbidden to use wood for building fences. All wood along the so-called Verkalinjen was to be used for alum production.
The surroundings of Sillaröd, located along the road between Andrarum and Illstorp, is dominated by agricultural landscapes, albeit not of a Scanian plain character. The increased presence of stone is clearly visible and the soil is partly described as poor.
One of the sights of the village is the old Sillaröd slate mill, a special mill where the mill wheel turns horizontally. The mill is maintained by the active Albo härads hembygdsförening.
The nearest major town with schools and services is in Tomelilla municipality Brösarp and in Sjöbo municipality Lövestad. Brösarp is less than a mile and a half to the east, while Lövestad is seven kilometres south of Sillaröd. Bus connections are available on national road 19 at Eljaröd.
