Gårdlösa

Below the Gårdlösa ridge, the small village of Gårdlösa grew up in the Middle Ages, a unique farming village consisting of a number of large farms often with lavish exterior building details such as cornices and recessed stone slabs. These farms mainly date from the mid-19th century.

But people have lived on Gårdlösaåsen for much longer. The ridge is an offshoot of Listarumsåsen and has been carefully excavated on several occasions. The finds are plentiful. There are lots of graves, a number of ships and judgement rings. Gårdlösa has gained worldwide interest since the discovery of the grave with the remains of the so-called Silver Girl. The grave dates back to the 200s and a piece of silver jewellery with unique runic inscriptions was found in it.

Three names that put Gårdlösa on the map are Frans Lindberg, the goose painter, whose meticulous depictions of folk life in watercolour were collected in 2009 in a fine memory book by the villagers Kristina Eriksson and Kajsa Josephson, the flying ace Charles Lindbergh, whose grandfather Ola Månsson lived in Gårdlösa, and Edward Persson, who partly filmed the film Söder om landsvägen in the village in 1936.

The vibrant village community that also includes the neighbouring village Smedstorp keeps going all year round with exciting activities, including art walks in the artist-rich villages. Smedstorp is within a kilometre and there is a railway station here that offers hourly services during the day to Simrishamn in the east and Tomelilla-Ystad-Malmö in the west. Smedstorp has services in the form of shops, school, childcare, church etc.
