Eljaröd

Half a mile south of Brösarp the road sign points to the old village of Eljaröd. People have lived here since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the abundance of ancient finds. The village lies mainly on both sides of the old highway, which has now been replaced by a new stretch of national road 19, and the newer road to the west. When the new road through the village was built, the otherwise typical stone fences, which remain elsewhere in the village, disappeared. Straight farm alleys are also a typical feature. The terrain is hilly and the difference in altitude between the village and the Verkaån river is 130 metres.

The suffix -röd is said to mean clearing, which also indicates that the village is considerably old. The surrounding landscape, characterised by a lush, rather hilly mixture of pasture and woodland, is typical of Albo härad, a type of intermediate countryside between plains and woodland, also known as rice country. There are many trees, probably because large areas to the west and north of the village were cleared and grazed so hard during the heyday of the Alun mill that areas of drifting sand were formed. Forest was planted to bind the sand.

Before the 1816 reorganisation, there were 16 farms around the 13th century church. Today, only three farms remain in the village. A memory from the 18th century is the old mill building by Eljarödsbäcken, which meanders through the village and flows into Verkeån. Several of the village houses are half-timbered gatehouses built in the 19th century, while others were built in the 1930s and 1940s when the village experienced a lively era. In the late 1980s, a large open area in the southern part of the village was developed with modern terraced house apartments, giving the village an exciting mix of different times and building methods. Eljaröd has a popular outdoor swimming pool and a parent-run childcare co-operative, Eljen.

Eljaröd has frequent bus connections north and south and is close to both Hallamölla with Skåne's highest waterfall and Christinehof Castle. Just south of the village are the Benedictine monasteries of Mariavall and St Benedict.
The nearest larger community with services such as schools, health centre, hotel and restaurant, grocery store is Brösarp, five kilometres north of Eljaröd. The distance to the municipality's main town Tomelilla is about two miles.
